Iâd continue to approach this story by thinking about secrets and changes. Iâd add some big event coming up that creates more pressure and a time-sensitive need to solve the case. Perhaps the community is trying to lure a popular theatre festival to Forks, and they canât have an unsolved murder spoiling their chance. Iâd create lots of opportunities for Annalise to interact with all the characters mentioned above. That would include the potential love interest with the new sheriff.
As in The Orient Express, Annalise would uncover all kinds of secrets not only about the victim but about the suspects. This is where Iâd fold in the tropes big time! All the time, Annalise is following up on details that draw her closer to the town council but not to Blanche. Iâd create another character, who is the real red herring for this. Someone who acts suspicious and is hiding a secret. But that secret is not related to Markâs death. The secret could be they are moonlighting as a secret pen name author and donât want anyone to find out.
The story would include a series of funny scenes with Annalise interviewing various suspects while dealing with her job, family, and friends. The big final reveal shows Blanche as the one with the poison; perhaps the local librarian helped her with research on picking mushrooms. And the final scene should be with the community altogether, reinforcing the bonds between them.
Above all, Iâd want to make sure I answered the story question about who killed Mark but left enough room for further adventures in this world by hinting at future romance and Annaliseâs continued attempt to keep her store going and her new sleuthing career.
